Mr. Dan Mullens and others in his community in Leesville had to travel to Hawthorne to attend the Shady Grove Methodist Church at the end of the 19th century. Desiring their own church in Leesville, they asked Rev. Braddock of Shady Grove to help get a church started. In January 1898, Rev. Braddock received permission to start a church in Leesville. A small wooden building was constructed on property owned by Mrs. Nettie Kirk. That site later became the location of a Buick dealership. Services began in the new church in May of 1898. The structure also served as a school.
The church was renovated in 1915 under the leadership of Rev. S.H. Hayes. It was again remodeled in 1958 while Rev. E.L. Berry served as pastor.
To be a Christian, simply put, is to be a Jesus-follower; to do what Jesus did and to act like Jesus’ acted. However, we are only able to truly act like Jesus when our minds are being transformed into “the mind of Christ” through the ongoing, renewing work of the Holy Spirit (Romans 12:1-2; 1 Corinthians 2). We were created in God’s image to rule and reign in the earth as God’s ambassador of wholeness, peace, joy, healing, righteousness, etc. (Genesis 1:26-28).
Initiating the Christian journey can be done in three easy steps: Admit Sin. (Telling God I’m sorry for trying to live life on my terms and not His). Turn Around. (Telling God that I’m ready to live by His terms, receive His forgiveness, walk in the footsteps of Jesus, trust in Him, and receive the renewing presence of the Holy Spirit). Say Thank You. (Thanking God for His love, grace, forgiveness, and for the renewing work Jesus did on the cross).
Join a vibrant, growing church, like Mt. Zion Church Family, join a Bible study, and learn to pray. Your church should preach and study from the Bible, and its members should understand what it means to love God, love an serve each other, and love and serve the world. Prayer is the primary way the Lord gets things done here on earth.
As United Methodists, we believe that God is no respecter of persons and that His Grace is freely given to all and is accessible by all. United Methodists do not believe that some persons are created to be chosen for salvation and others are created to be condemned. We do not believe in “predestination” in the classic protestant understanding. United Methodists believe that before we were capable of choosing God, He called and loved us through Prevenient Grace. When we surrender our own wills and align ourselves with the will of God through Jesus Christ, we are “made right” through the work of Jesus Christ on the cross through Justified Grace. Through Jesus Christ we grow in our desire to become more and more “holy” or set apart for the work and purposes of the Kingdom of God by Sanctifying Grace.
